DOE issues final rules for air conditioners, heat pumps

The Department of Energy moved to finalize two efficiency rules this week that could slash carbon emissions and save consumers more than $12 billion. The final standards for residential air conditioners and heat pumps would save about double the energy of most DOE efficiency rules finalized in the last year. The rule alone would reduce CO2 emissions through 2030 by the equivalent annual electricity use of more than 1 million homes, according to DOE.
