Amtrak train was 50 mph over speed limit before fatal crash

An Amtrak train that derailed off an overpass and onto a busy highway outside Tacoma, Wash., yesterday was going 50 mph over the speed limit for that section of track, National Transportation Safety Board officials said last night. At least three people were killed and about 100 injured when all 12 coaches and one of the train's engines came off the tracks, sending two coaches onto the interstate (Greenwire, Dec. 18).
