Fragile deep-sea corals move closer to federal protections

Some of the Gulf of Mexico's oldest deep-sea corals are closer to gaining federal protections. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council voted unanimously last month to designate 480 square miles as "habitat areas of particular concern." Such a status makes the area a priority for conservation efforts and scientific research.
