IG to probe Clean Air Act compliance checks during pandemic

EPA's inspector general is launching a review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on compliancemonitoring work by state and local air agencies.The overall goal is to assess the effect on regulators' efforts to confirm that polluting facilities "are complying withthe Clean Air Act and federal air regulations," according to a memo sent today from Renee McGhee-Lenart,acting head of the inspector general's air directorate, to EPA enforcement chief Susan Bodine.Besides examining the pandemic's impact on the number and type of compliance monitoring activitiesundertaken by state and local regulators, the review will determine what kind of guidance EPA has provided tohelp them prioritize that work and how those agencies have actually done so.
