Americans throw away a lot of plastic credit cards, most of them destined for the landfill or even the ocean. But industry giant Mastercard wants to help more banks offer green alternatives. Credit cards are typically made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which is difficult to recycle. Mastercard already offers its consumers cards made from alternatives including recyclable, chlorine-free or biodegradable materials. Now it wants to expand to all card issuers globally through a sustainable card program announced last month that includes a directory of sustainable materials and vendors for payment card products. "This way, everyone benefits," Ajay Bhalla, Mastercard's president of cyber and intelligence, said in an email. "It's better for the environment, it's better for business and it meets evolving consumer needs."
