Marsh dwellers star in films about La. Bayous

A series of visually rich films about climate risk and perseverance in southeastern Louisiana premiers today,highlighting one of the most threatened regions in the United States."Last Call for the Bayou," a series of five short films, was shot in Louisiana's swamps, sloughs, barrier islandsand shrimping grounds near the mouth of the Mississippi River. The films can be streamed on the SmithsonianChannel.Don't mistake it for another Earth-in-peril documentary narrated by a Hollywood star. While the risks of climatechange inform the entire project, its stories are told mostly through the lens of intrepid, thick-accented Louisianamarsh dwellers who look upriver toward New Orleans.The films feature people like Albertine Kimble, the self-described "Duck Queen" of Plaquemines Parish; BenDepp, a photographer whose day job is capturing Louisiana's shrinking barrier islands from a motorizedparaglider; and Gleason Alexis, a lifelong shrimper stuck between dwindling catches and the dangers of fishingthe deeper waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
