Interior advances proposed e-bike rules

The Interior Department is taking another major step toward expanding the use of e-bikes on public lands.The Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and Bureau of Reclamation today issued proposedrules that would allow each agency to authorize the use of e-bikes, or electric bicycles, which are similar tostandard bicycles but are powered by a small engine.The National Park Service - which last year was the first Interior agency to issue an e-bikes policy and to imposerestrictions on their use if necessary - also announced today that it has developed a proposed rule for e-bikes. Itdid not, however, include a copy of the actual rule language (Greenwire, Aug. 30, 2019).The proposed rules unveiled today by NPS, BLM, FWS and Reclamation come in response to an order InteriorSecretary David Bernhardt signed last August directing the agencies to develop policies for e-bike usage as partof a strategy to increase access to public lands.
