READING MINDS IN GREEK TRAGEDY*

A notable intellectual development of the past decade or two has beennthe ever-growing interest in human consciousness and the workingsnof the mind. Sometimes grouped under the umbrella term ‘cognitivensciences’, diverse disciplines such as neuroscience, psychology,nphilosophy, computer science, and linguistics have all made majorncontributions to our understanding of the human mind and brain;nand the large number of popular science books published in this areanshow that this can be an engrossing topic for the layperson as much asnfor experts.1 In this article we want to explore, at a rather general andnnon-technical level, how this focus on matters of cognition can help usnthink about an aspect of Greek tragedy.
