In the early Imperial Age, the steadily growing Christian movementnwas viewed with suspicion by both the authorities and the peoplenof Rome; in the second century, the Roman rejection of Christiannteachings, customs, and practices resulted in a most intriguing countermovement.nDuring this century, two types of negative response to thenChristian faith had become established. The fi rst encompasses thenanti-Christian accusations circulating among the Roman populationnduring most of the period, occasionally resulting in Christians beingnpersecuted. At the end of the century, supplementary controversynarose from within the intellectual world. Those who engaged in thisnpolemic were authors who had studied Christian customs, and whonconsequently targeted the substance of the Christian teachings.
