I have investigated the possibility of replacing a traditional tachograph by a GNSS-based system, herein called a GNSS odometer. The study has shown that an accuracy of 4 percent-as typically required for mechanical tachographs - is easily achievable if the average vehicle speed is higher than about 1 meter per second, the data rate is 1 Hz or higher, and if the distance is computed from estimated speed values based on high-quality Doppler measurements. First experimental results corroborated that this accuracy is even attainable in an urban environment.
