Sherman (Sherm) Gowdy Francisco, a GPS pioneer, died on January 7 at his home in Rockville, Maryland, at the age of 75. He was chief engineer and driving force for the GPS Control Segment during his time with IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin.rn"He personally solved many of the hard filter, clock, orbital, and atmospheric problems that existed in the pre-launch and early constellation days of GPS, helping the system become the high-accuracy, high-integrity success that it is today," recalled GPS World Advisory Board member Art Gower.
