The Chinese wireless market is like Winston Churchill's description of Russia: an enigma wrapped inside a riddle. Hard facts are difficult to come by, making clear analysis and forecasting tough. But there are a few hard facts that make trying to understand this enigma worthwhile—it has a 200% annual growth rate and more than 1 billion potential customers. Cellular radio, paging and wireless access are all booming in China, which is set to become the world leader in wireless penetration by the year 2000 (Figure 1).
