Suppliers eye emerging markets to ride out economic crisis

A survey conducted by Global Sources indicates nearly 60 percent of China suppliers will focus on emerging economies or the domestic market in the first half of 2009 in an effort to sustain exports amid falling demand from the US and the EU. Close to 50 percent of respondents will take the former step, increasing shipments to non-EU countries and the Asia-Pacific region.rnThe survey, which was conducted during the onset of the economic crisis in December 2008 and January 2009, shows that 55 percent of suppliers experienced flat or decreased sales in 2008 compared with a year earlier.This is the main factor prompting the shift away from traditionally strong markets.
