摘要

Although there are no standard measures and reliable statistics, it is widely stated that one-third of the world's population lacks reliable access to essential medicines, mostly in developing countries. The international health community - including international development agencies, financing and philanthropic organisations, governments, product developers, advocacy groups, and technical assistance providers - has responded with unprecedented and concerted efforts to address this inequity and improve the health of underserved populations. Some global initiatives target development of new or improved vaccines, medicines or diagnostics for neglected diseases or existing health conditions that require more effective treatments. Other initiatives work to expand access to already existing but underused effective health technologies such as vaccines.
