Bills in US Congress on Mileage Standards and Carbon Caps

A bipartisan group of US Senators introduced a bill in May 2006 to raise corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for all vehicles, including SUVs, light trucks, and sedans, from 25 miles per gallon (mpg) to 35 mpg by model year 2017. If enacted, the bill would lessen US dependence on foreign oil, perhaps bring down the price of gasoline, and clean up the air.
