During the Reith Lectures in 1999, Anthony Giddens, then Director of the London School of Economics, declared "when the image of Nelson Mandela ... is more familiar to us than the face of our next-door neighbor, something has changed in the nature of our everyday experience." The often superficial knowledge that we acquire through the global revolution in communications, short travel trips, and business dealings, however, can perpetuate stereotypes.
