G8 TALKS IN ITALY YIELD INCREMENTAL PROGRESS ON CLIMATE CHANGE DEAL

International climate negotiators wrapped up a busy week July 10, splitting their time between the annual G8 Summit and President Obama's fifth Major Economies Forum (MEF)-both of which were held in L'Aquila, Italy.Speaking to reporters following the MEF July 9, President Obama said "the G8 nations came to a historic consensus" on a binding, long-term emissions reduction target aimed at reducing emissions in industrialized nations approximately 80 percent by 2050. "This ambitious effort is consistent with limiting global warming to no more than two degrees Celsius, which-as our declaration explicitly acknowledged for the first time-is what the mainstream ... scientific community has called for," Obama said of the agreement.
