In engineered landfills, geomembranes are commonly used to isolate waste from the surrounding ground and groundwater in order to minimize the potential groundwater contamination. On the sides of a landfill, geomembranes are placed on prepared sloped surfaces and anchored at the crest level. Subsequent construction of a landfill includes the placement of soil cover and waste layers up to various heights over these liners. This can result in application of substantial down-slope shear stresses on the liners leading to development of significant liner tension. The current paper presents analytic solutions for the analysis of geomembrane tension. In contrast to the limit equilibrium approach, the solutions take into account the elasticity of both geomembrane and slope system, and the geomembrane--clay interface characteristics.
