The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is located 55 miles west of downtown Phoenix and is the largest power producer of any kind in the United States. Its three units are capable of generating more than 4,000 megawatts of electricity. The facility provides power to New Mexico, California, Texas, and Arizona. Palo Verde's design, construction, and operation are based on robust levels of containment for various materials and processes in compliance with federal and state regulations. On-site containment includes not just radioactive material but more than 4.4 billion gallons of water. This amount of storage is designed to provide sufficient cooling water for longer than one year in the unlikely event of a severe accident.
