Australia is an old continent with habitats that produce distinctive flora and fauna. The continent is also home to enduring civilisations, people with uncanny ways of embracing the often difficult living conditions of their country. The continent is also overlain with colonisation that began in the late 18th century when Great Britain established penal settlements for the export of criminals from its overcrowded prisons, and extended through more than two centuries of invasion and occupation as new migrants arrived and settled.
