Modern carpets consist of synthetic fibres such as polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA) or polyester (PES) in the surface layer, the carrier fabric and the backing. Stiffness, adhesive ability and other properties are achieved by the backing.rnDepending on the manufacturing method, carpets are categorized as either pile yarn carpets (tufted, woven) or non-vvovens (needlefelt). In tufting, which is the most important manufacturing method, tufts of yarn are inserted into a prefabricated backing and the loops are fixed into the back by a coating. One drawback is that conventional synthetic carpets consist of various materials and thus cannot be recycled. In addition, they often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are a health hazard.
