Record high for man-made fibers

For the first time in history, the worldwide fiber demand grew to more than 90 million tons in 2013. According to the industry association Industrievereinigung Chemiefaser e.V. (IVC), compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 4.4%, to 90.1 million tons, and an aver-age per-capita use of 12.7 kilos of textile materials for apparel, home textiles, carpets and technical textiles. Man-made fibers were able to continue their growth trend; synthetic fibers showed an increase of 5.7%, to 54.4 million tons, mainly carried by increases in polyester and polyamide, while cellulose fiber volume increase was once again more dynamic with 10.4%, now reaching al-most six million tons. Cotton, on the other hand, still experi-enced a production decline and only a very small increase in demand by 0.9%, to 23.6 million tons. For the first time in history, the worldwide stock passed the 20 million tons mark, which is 85 % of the annual demand.
