Font usage and licensing has become more complex with the development of new electronic communication technologies. Before the online digital revolution, fonts resided on a licensee's workstations and perhaps a local area network (LAN) server with a defined number of users accessing them. With the the digital communication revolution, font usage has become more open with the possibility of a limitless number of users. However, font usage is governed by the font manufacturer's end-user license agreement (EULA). Fonts were originally manufactured as wood and lead letterpress type characters. No longer created by lead type, the font character or typeface is generated by a software program called a font.
