Hydraulic fracturing is employed in almost all U.S. onshore natural gas wells to improve the deliverability of the well and economics of the development. The application of hydraulic fracturing is particularly important in unconventional gas reservoirs, where economics may be marginal even with a successful stimulation. In such reservoirs, the application of new technology to characterize, access, stimulate and produce the reservoir is critical for optimization of the stimulation treatments and field development. Many of these resources can be characterized as "technology plays," where economic development would be impossible without some of the advanced technology employed.
