Ein Park für Pier 40, New York

Manhattan's waterfront is lined by piers. Many of the derelict ones are now being incorporated into the Hudson River Park (see Garten + Land-schaft, 2/2000). One of these consists of Pier 40, a square, two-storey passenger ship terminal now being used as a car park. Since it could be put to better use as a park for the adjacent crowded neighbourhoods, an international ideas competition was held in 1998 and followed by a six-week design workshop to determine the wishes of local residents. The idea of creating a green oasis was not popular among car-owners, but a solution was found by the winners, the Re-gensburg architect Sebastian Knorr, and the Kassel landscape planners GTL, by creating a vertical automated park facility with a small footprint. The number of suggested sports and leisure uses also exceeded the project brief, but the problem was solved by layering the park into four levels while retaining much of the existing structure to cut costs. Income-generating uses are also included, making it more likely that a go-ahead will be provided to start work on the $120-million project.
