Professionals have been discussing new American, Netherlandish and German styles of planting perennials for years. What are often ecologically determined principles of design and maintenance differentiate them from the classic English flowerbed. Has it become outdated and to what extent can foreign styles complement or even supplant it? The naturalistic Dutch detailed pattern of colour and texture over broad patches contrasts with American ground covers consisting of large blocks of one species. The basic difference between styles depends on whether plants are seeded or planted. A typical example of German and Dutch partial ground coverage is steppe vegetation. It requires much maintenance. But they require more expertise and a longer, often unpredictable growth period. The variety of species for seeding in Great Britain is limited and not appropriate in urban settings, hence North American prairie flora predominate.
