The tracks area at a former railway station in the Reudnitz district of Leipzig is to be refurbished to create a green corridor topped by a seven-hectare park. The respective competition was won by the Kiefer office of Berlin, and involved a demanding brief: the park was to have a modern design, meet ecological requirements, be related to the vicinity and entail maximum public participation - all against the background of a difficult ownership and financing situation. The site itself is characterised by a motley collection of buildings, most of which are to be torn down, as well as a district heating pipeline that has to remain. The winning proposal creates a clearly legible framework made up of an axis of gabions and birches, crossed in turn by a line of metal trellises. The result is a rectilinear articulation that clearly refers to the buildings in the neighbourhood, thus meeting one of the requirements of the brief. The gabions fulfil others in that they can be filled with demolition rubble, and that this can be done by local residents wanting to become involved. Within the framework of gabions and trellises, the park is divided into a long central meadow flanked by a modular system of plots for use as private gardens or sports grounds. This flexible approach creates the prerequisites for later change, and helps reduce the cost of maintenance, as the budgetary constrictions necessitate.%Im „Graphischen Viertel" Leipzig/Reudnitz wird ein Bahnhofsgelände zum Park umgebaut. Ein flexibles Modulsystem der Flächennutzung minimiert die Kosten, ohne die Gestaltungsidee zu untergraben.
