Hayns Park in Eppendorf, Hamburg, is about 100 years old and extremely popular. The entrance situation had long been in need of improvement, however, and when the lease ran out on a neighbouring commercial lot in 1994, the city of Hamburg decided not to extend it but to add the 6,000-square-metre plot to the park. The vacated property thus became the subject of a competition restricted to young landscape architects and students, who were asked for a deliberately modern design. The winning entry features hedges interspersed with steel segments and shallow terraces, whereby a triangular precinct leading up to a raised gravel area forms the new entrance. The project met with a mixed reception from the very start, with the most criticism coming from newspapers with leanings in favour of the political parties that opposed the closure of the business formerly located at the site. The public has also been slow to accept the extension, but this may have to do with the fact that it deviates strongly from conventional ideas of what a park should look like.
