Some of the species found in electrodeposition electrolytes, as well as commonly-used pre- and post-treatment solutions are ideal nutrient media for microbial growth, the more so since the temperatures at which they operate are frequently also ideal. The truth of this is often evident in the form of algal fibres in suspension, slime coatings on container walls or blocked filters., all of which are the result of the explosive growth rate of such species. But if these are the most visible manifestations, lesser growths often remain undetected. Using printed circuit board processing as an example, it is shown how drastic methods can be used to eliminate organic species in process streams using various types of UV irradiation.
