This special issue follows WILF 2005, 6th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications, held in Crema (Milan) on 15-17 September 2005 and concentrates on a few aspects dealing with fuzzy sets in intelligent systems.rnWe found that the conference was quite successful, both in attendance and in the interest it generated among those present. Discussions during and after the conference with authors of the papers involved, as well as with the editorial board of Fuzzy Sets and Systems, led us to the idea of organizing a special issue based on selected papers of this conference.rnThis special issue includes enhanced versions of papers presented at WILF. Although the conference papers were already rigorously reviewed, in order to ensure meeting the high-quality standards of FSS journal, the extended and otherwise enhanced versions selected for this special issue have all been reviewed by at least two independent reviewers.rnThe papers accepted include both theoretical contributions with sound mathematical bases, and applications in various domains. A key feature of this special issue is that the collection of papers points to the variety of ways fuzzy methods can be successfully applied in intelligent systems. The subjects treated cover a wide range including logic programming, knowledge representation, practical reasoning, learning, and image processing.
