More than 40 years after the recycling movement first took root in the United States, Americas landfills are filling up faster than ever, mass consumption of natural resources continues to grow, and less than one-third of communities' solid waste goes to recycling centers, according to Samantha MacBride. She retraces the historical development of recycling, evaluating what went wrong and explaining why recycling has achieved far less than its advocates expected. She then points out some feasible paths for recycling's future.
