EPCglobal Inc. Ratifies RFID Generation 2 Standard for Tags

EPCglobal Inc. has ratified its UHF Generation 2 Electronic Product Code standard for radio frequency identification (RFID). Technology vendors, retailers, and manufacturers that have delayed their RFID activities while waiting for Gen 2 can now move forward, but some numbering structure and patent issues remain. "Standards requirements directly influence tag design and manufacture, and Gen 2 should enable manufacturers to realize much higher tag yield rates from their production lines," said John Fontanella, analyst at Yankee Group, in a report issued after the announcement. "Just as important, the existence of a standard protocol will encourage manufacturers that have been sitting on the sidelines to begin production. The standard also conforms to the FCC, European, and Asian UHF radio regulations, which allow EPC to be used globally."
