ANALYSIS OF PARTICIPATION OF LITHIUM IN GALLSTONES FROM SMOKING AND NON SMOKING PEOPLE FROM POLAND

Our study presents the statistical analysis of lithium content in gallbladder concretions in men and women. We studied gallstones collected intraoperationally from 146 women (49 smokers and 97 nonsmokers) and 24 men (11 smokers and 13 nonsmokers). Lithium content was determined employing Inductively Coupled Plasma - Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES).rnAverage lithium content in gallbladder concretions was higher in females than in males, i.e. 1460 μgLi·kg~(-1) and 1120μgLi·kg~(-1), respectively. The range of lithium concentration in gallstones was from 250 μgLi·kg~(-1) to 6790 μgLi·kg~(-1) in males, while it was from 250 μgLi·kg~(-1) to 17840 μgLi·kg~(-1) in females.rnLithium content in gallbladder concretions varied due to the place of residence of the studied individuals. The lowest lithium concentration in gallstones was detected in the inhabitants of the Bielsko-Biala region (24140 μgLi·kg~(-1) and the highest one characterized the inhabitants of the following cities: Czestochowa, Zawiercie and Katowice (75520 μgLi·kg~(-1)). The average lithium concentrations in hydroxy-apatites of gallbladder concretions in the inhabitants of recreational regions of Poland were statistically significantly lower (p<0.003) when compared to the lithium content in the inhabitants of Silesian cities characterized by the highest environmental pollution.rnThe most statistically probable ranges of variation in lithium content of gallstones were the highest in female and male nonsmokers, i.e. 800-2180 μgLi·kg~(-1) and 530-2890 μgLi·kg~(-1), respectively.rnThe values of variation coefficients of lithium concentration in gallbladder concretions were similar both in females (187 %) and males (139 %) The study results show that lithium accumulates extensively in gallbladder concretions.
