This study dealt with the toxicity of l-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide ([C_8mim]Br) on freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica for the first time. The 120h-LC_(50) and 168h-LC_(50) values were 400 and 220mg/L, respectively. Mortality as well as the locomotive and morphological changes were investigated when planarians were exposed to [C_8mim]Br solution. The present results demonstrated that the ionic liquid [C_8mim]Br has toxic effects on D. japonica and can cause locomotor and morphological changes. The results of mortality and Independent-Samples T-Test indicate [C_8mim]Br has lethal effect to D. japonica and this effect is dose-dependent. Furthermore, planarians were subjected to chronic exposure to [C_8mim] Br and tissue damages were analysed on microscopic slides. Histological preparations show distinct cytotoxicity of [C_8mim]Br at all tested concentrations. These results provide initial information to assess the potential hazards of ILs should they reach freshwater ecosystems.
