摘要

The rate of energy consumption is rapidly increasing in Turkey, in parallel to the population increase. Therefore, it is necessary to produce more energy; people are trying to develop and apply technologies that will enable them to use renewable energy sources. However, widespread using of renewable energy sources causes environmental problems that threaten human health and lead to disruption of the ecological balance with short and long-term effects. In this study, environmental effects of the hydroelectric power plants were analyzed between 2006 and 2012 in the Giresun Province located in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey, using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System. Many hydroelectric power plants were completed in the province, and many others are planned leading to environmental problems. Temporal changes occurring due to Hydroelectric Power Plants are determined, and the obtained results presented. In this process, due to the ponds, a relative increase was observed in the water class, while the green area decreased by 15%, and bare land increased by 13%.
