Much of the fun of proxy season-you do find it fun? -is getting a peek at the private finances of public figures who make a whole lot of money. Even if you don't read proxy statements recreationally, like some of us, you get much of the juice by reading the frequent newspaper reports of CEO pay at major companies. But those articles are much richer if you can place them in the context of influential developments in executive pay-and if you understand some of the important but little-known forces behind what's happening.
