The president of the Republic of Finland is the supreme commander in chief of the Finnish armed forces. The Defense Council acts as a consultative body to the president and is responsible for planning and coordination. The council is chaired by the prime minister. Other members include the commander of the Defense Forces, the chief of general headquarters, and five cabinet ministers.
