In recent years, Zimbabwe's ability to purchase arms has been drastically affected both by the imposition of various arms embargoes and a dramatic downturn in the economy. What purchases have been made have tended to come either from the few remaining friendly countries, such as China, or via international arms brokers. Even though financing has become a real problem, the government apparently makes an effort to keep the military funded since President Robert Mugabe is dependent on the military to remain in power.
