摘要

This month's supplement contains annual updates for the International Military Markets Middle East & Africa service. Please see the Recent Activity section at the end of the Highlights for additional coverage of the Middle Eastern & African market.rnDefense Spending. Most observers place UAE defense investment at around 3.1 percent of annual GDP. Still others estimate that the government allocates around 20-30 percent of its total expenditures toward defense/security spending. Regardless, considering the tiny size of the UAE in terms of both population and territory, its defense/security expenditures make it one of the region's highest military investors and one of the largest arms importers in the world. Years of skyrocketing energy proceeds allowed the tiny Gulf state to invest in advanced military equipment used to provide it with a qualitative edge in hardware over Iran, the clearest regional rival for the UAE.
