Security Environment. Wedged into a comer between southeast Iraq and northeastern Saudi Arabia, with its eastern flank bordering the Persian Gulf, Kuwait is a tiny country lying in the path of any regional confrontation. Across the Gulf from Kuwait is the Islamic Republic of Iran, a nation asserting itself as the chief contender for regional heavyweight. Within this environment, Kuwait is exposed. The country relies upon its close relations with the U.S. and its position as a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as a line of defense guaranteeing its national sovereignty.
