Overview: Security Environment. In the past, Mali's weak political institutions, nonexistent economy, and inadequate military capability made it susceptible to threats and influence from external forces, specifically neighboring nations. Some improvement in the last two decades in Mali's political foundations, however, had allowed the government to operate under a democratic institution that maintained at least some semblance of control over the nation. In 2012, this recent progress was put to the test when renewed hostility between rebel groups and the central government, and a military coup that unseated President Amadou Toumani Toure, launched the nation into a chaotic state.
