Market Overview. Gabon faces no immediate external threats, though it has expressed concerns regarding continued instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that could spill over into the Republic of Congo and possibly its own territory. Although there were plans to strengthen the Gabonese military to defend against possible involvement in the Congolese civil war, the relative calm prevailing in most of the DRC - especially those areas closest to Gabon - makes such an effort less of a priority. Furthermore, the internal situation has generally appeared quiet. Gabonese officials recently traveled to Cameroon to discuss their shared military cooperation ties, with a focus on fighting terrorism. Even so, Gabon has largely remained untouched by terror groups like Boko Haram, while neighboring Cameroon has fought the group alongside Nigeria. However, the country did experience some turbulence with the 2016 elections, and lingering minor incidents are a source of concern for the government.
