When Thomas Moser quit teaching communications at Bates College 25 years ago, he turned to what he loved doing—woodworking. But how to make money? He lost a few years and thousands of dollars before finding the answer. "I realized we had to have an identifiable product with a distinct design," says Moser, 64. "There's no other way to build equity in this business."
