On the Road

Mandalay, Myanmar: Stand on the western bank of the Ayeyarwady River, looking down on Myanmar's longest waterway, and time seems to stand still. A short distance up the river lean, bare-torsoed dock workers shoulder 100-lb. bags of rice along a gangplank. Across the water, a steep hill is studded with pagodas where the monks, nuns and common folk of this country formerly known as Burma have come to worship Buddha for almost a thousand years.
