Baxter International's director of investor relations, Mary Kay Ladone, 37, and her dentist husband, Paul, 36, were sitting on $150,000 in cash. Their stock portfolio, heavy in health care, lost 20% in 2002. But with demanding careers and four children, ages 3 to 9, the Naperville, Ill. couple had little time to study alternatives. "With so much volatility out there, we just decided to not decide on anything," she admits. Finally, last winter, at their tax accountant's urging, the Ladones sat down with a planner to revamp their portfolio. "I'm taking a little bit of a leap of faith reallocating," she says. "But not doing anything was too conservative, if not foolish."
