When director King Vidor needed an actor to play Howard Roark in The Fountainhead, he made sure he got Gary Cooper. Square-jawed and steely-eyed, Cooper was the clear choice to portray novelist Ayn Rand's heroically uncompromising (if annoyingly pedantic) architect. As written by Rand, Roark was the embodiment of impregnable architectural principles. "Nothing can be reasonable or beautiful unless it's made by one central idea, and the idea sets every detail," he explained at the outset of the book. "A building is alive, like a man. Its integrity is to follow its own truth, its one single theme, and to serve its own single purpose."
