On March 11, 1915, a 22-year-old artist named Fortunato Depero announced his intention "to reconstruct the universe."The newest recruit to the Futurist movement--just six years old and made up of a cluster of aggressively avant-garde Italians full of revolutionary aspirations-Depero hardly had the skill to redecorate a drawing room. Yet his audacity and ambition (not to mention his bluster) would prove to be the dominant personality traits of the movement, which marks its 100th anniversary this year. Futurism will be celebrated with museum retrospectives in Italy, its birthplace; in London at the Tate Modern; and by the publication of several hefty books. (See "Celebrating Futurism," page 87.)
