For institutional investors who crave certainty and predictability, these are challenging times. According to Northwestern Mutual Chief Investment Officer Ron Joelson, the overall lack of confidence in the economy and the global nature of the markets have made it increasingly difficult for companies to make hiring decisions or confidently plan for business growth. As a result, institutional investors find themselves in unfamiliar territory. "Historically, you could do well in the market if you simply understood the companies you were investing in," says Joelson, who manages over $174 billion in investable assets. "But today, that's not good enough."
