Britain's Peter Goodfellow, the ponytailed scientist running Glaxo- SmithKline's 1,500-man research discovery unit, is trying to cure the cancer eating away at the pharmaceutical industry: Total research and development in the industry worldwide has hit $45 billion, twice the amount spent a decade ago. Despite this dramatic increase, however, the global launches of medicines with new active ingredients actually fell, from 52 to 31, between 1991 and 2001.
