Bonsai! Japan's ancient art form is taking root elsewhere around the world

When tokyo's metropoli-tan Art Museum hosts the eightieth national show of bonsai (Feb. 9-17), 30,000 to 35,000 visitors will gape at 470 itty-bitty trees. These trees—the finest in Japan—are among many hundreds more that competed for the honor of display, only to be turned down by judges from the Nippon Bonsai Association, which controls the show.
